Mampong Assembly moves to curb child labour

Mampong (Ash), July 16, GNA – Mr. Daniel Appau Ohyeamang, Municipal Chief Executive of Asante-Mampong, has condemned the upsurge of child labour in the area and pledged the assembly's resolve to tackle the problem.

He described as unacceptable the situation where some parents engaged their children of school going age in child labour to the detriment of their education.

Most parents especially those living in farming communities take their children with them to work on the farm during school hours.

The MCE said as part of measures to check this, an Anti-Child Labour Committee would be formed by the Assembly.

The Committee would pay random visits to child labour endemic areas to track down offending parents, arrest and prosecute them.

Mr. Ohyeamang said this when he toured some communities in the Municipality on Tuesday and some of communities he visited were Atonsuagya, Dome-Oseikrom, Adudwan and Sataso.

He told the people that 40 per cent of the assembly's share of the Common Fund would be channeled into the development of education.

Classroom blocks in bad shape would be rehabilitated and new ones built for smooth academic work.

Mr. Ohyeamang debunked rumors that the Mills Administration had planned to cancel the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), explaining that, on the contrary, the government would rather strengthen the structures to ensure quality health care for every Ghanaian.

He assured farmers, whose crops were destroyed by recent heavy rains, that the assembly would support them with fertilizers at subsidized cost and also facilitate the acquisition of soft loans.

Nana Kwame Yeboah, Odikro of Dome, appealed for the building of teachers' quarters and library for the Dome-Oseikrom community.
