Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has stressed that a strong and well-distributed health workforce remains central to Ghana’s push towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

She made the remarks in a social media post on Wednesday, June 10, following her participation in the 2026 Annual Health Summit.

The summit, held on Tuesday, brought together stakeholders in the health sector to review performance, assess progress and reflect on challenges within Ghana’s healthcare system.

In her post, the Vice President highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the health sector under the country’s broader development agenda.

“Ghana’s health interventions are guided by the Accra Reset on Health Sovereignty, which seeks to reposition health as a pillar of national development, economic resilience, and security,” she stated.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang noted that the Accra Reset framework emphasises a shift from dependency towards stronger domestic financing, local capacity building and health workforce development.

She added that government is already implementing initiatives such as Free Primary Healthcare and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, known popularly as MahamaCares, to strengthen the system.

According to her, significant progress has been made in expanding the health workforce, but disparities in deployment still remain a challenge.

“I noted that a strong and well-distributed health workforce remains central to achieving Universal Health Coverage,” she said.

The Vice President explained that government is recruiting thousands of health professionals, with focus on community health nurses, midwives, physician assistants and public health officers.
