The Tema General Hospital (TGH) is to be upgraded into a regional hospital to enable it to cater adequately for the increasing number of patients. Established in 1954 to cater for workers of the Tema Port, the hospital now handles patients from the Eastern and Volta Regions as well.
In line with this, a new modern maternity block has been planned for the hospital.
The Minister of Health, Dr George Sipa-Adjah Yankey, disclosed this last Friday, when he inaugurated a 600,000-dollar Eye Care Centre at the hospital on behalf of President J.E.A. Mills.
The facility, Christened the Tema Lions Club Eye Care Centre, was financed by the Tema Lions Clubs.
Among the new looks of the Centre are four consulting rooms, two waiting rooms and an operating theatre.
Dr Yankey said a preliminary survey had been carried out to ascertain the facilities that the hospital would require under its new status, assuring that the Ministry of finance would soon release funds for the project to take off.
He commended the Tema Lions Club for providing the Eye Care Centre, which he said, would go along way to relieve the sufferings of eye patients.
He noted that eye problems fell within the top 10 causes of out-patients attendance and account for over two per cent of cases at hospitals.
Dr Yankey said apart from providing eye care services, the centre would also be used as a training centre for eye care personnel at the levels of the health sector.
MR Clement Torsutse, President of Tema Lions Club urged the management of the hospital to take good care of the centre so that its full potential could be realized.
Dr Charity Sarpong, Superintendent of the hospital appealed to corporate bodies in the Tema Metropolis to emulate the Lions Club by adopting a ward each in the hospital.

I think the upgrade of the Tema General Hospital should not only be limted to the buildings and equipment, but also to the DOCTORS, NURSES all other staffs, and the entire system by which it operates too. I do not believe there is any health system with the status of this hospital that will discharge a patient on admission wth stroke without discussing when to get back for a review and arrangement of his/her physio.
