Apedwa YMCA To Become Vocational School

The chief and people of Apedwa in the Eastern Region have started a  project to rehabilitate the local YMCA for as a vocational training institute for young people in the community and surrounding areas.

The work includes the rehabilitation of the residential quarters for the principal, the construction of toilets and bathrooms for the dormitories, painting of the old building, restoration of windows and doors and the extension of electricity to the facility.

At a fundraising ceremony in aid of the project, the Chief of Apedwa, Barima Obenakwa Kwarifa II, appealed to the communities in the area to join hands and put the institution  to better use for the education of the children.

He appealed to his people to show interest in the training programme by enrolling in the school.

For instance, he said, the school would offer training in carpentry, sewing, masonry, electrical and catering and gave the assurance that he would help make the project successful for the benefit of the youth.

He said he would support the rehabilitation of the facility and sponsor the first 10 people to put in their applications.

He appealed to citizens of the town, both in Ghana and abroad, to help with the rehabilitation by donating cash or materials or both.        

Nana Kwasi Nkansah, chairman of the Town Development Association, appealed to the people not to interfere in the running of the facility so that just like all other institutions, the objectives for the establishment would be achieved.

Mr John Mantey, the Community Youth Leader, appealed to his peers to take advantage of the skills to be offered by the institution to improve upon their basic education and become better citizens.

A seven-member board of directors was formed to help with the administration of the facility, with Mr Prosper Hoeyi and Mr E. K. Boabeng as the chairman and vice-chairman respectively.

An amount of GH¢6,500.00 which was realised from the fundraising was used as seed money for the beginning of the project which is expected to be completed in six months.
