  Tue, 02 Dec 2008

Winneba Senior High School has improved its academic performance following a take-over by a new administration, Mrs Cecelia Kwakye Coffie, headmistress announced at the school's 60th Anniversary celebration.

She said the school's academic performance had progressed from 82 per cent in 2005 to 93 percent this year adding that the highest student score being seven “A”s and a “B” grades.

Mrs Coffie said this at the anniversary celebration under the theme “Quality Education - A tool for nation building' at Winneba on Saturday.

She said, this year, out of 24 subjects registered 17 recorded 100 percent. This was a major improvement over the previous year's record where 15 subjects recorded 100 percent.

Mrs Coffie said there was every indication that with the increase in the number of years from three to four in the second cycle institution, the school would do much better.

She said the school had produced many sons and daughters occupying enviable positions in the country and mentioned some of them as Professor Kwesi Yankah, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon and Mr Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin North.

According to her, two tutors of the school, Mrs Victoria Quartson and Mrs Theodora Yarney took two best teacher awards at the National Best Teacher Awards in the secondary category this year.

She said a student from the school, who was selected with five people nationwide, took United College Scholarship Award to enter a University at Wales in United Kingdom.

The headmistress attributed the good performance to the high sense of discipline and hard work of tutors, staff and students in general.

Mrs Coffie said the school currently lacked vehicles, and a good library facility saying one that was built for a student population of about 300, forty years ago, is now being used by about 1,100 students. She said the 59-year old school which begun with 21 students in a private place now has a student population of 1,100.
