Nana Ama backs ban on cultural welcomes at airports, says travellers’ privacy must be protected

Media personality Nana Ama has thrown her support behind the decision to restrict cultural welcome performances at Ghanaian airports, arguing that the privacy and comfort of travellers should be given priority.

Speaking during a discussion on United Showbiz, Nana Ama explained that although cultural performances are important in promoting tourism and showcasing Ghana's rich heritage, not every visitor arriving in the country may appreciate being surrounded by people performing traditional dances.

According to her, some travellers may have personal reasons for wanting to maintain their privacy upon arrival and may prefer to move through the airport without attracting public attention.

She argued that such visitors could find it uncomfortable when cultural groups gather around them to perform welcome dances, leaving them with little choice but to participate in an experience they may not have requested.

To support her argument, Nana Ama cited South Africa, noting that despite the country's reputation for its beautiful tourist attractions and development, it is also associated with concerns about pickpocketing at airports, an issue she believes can negatively affect its international image.

She suggested that Ghana must be mindful of the different experiences visitors may have at its airports and ensure that tourism promotion does not come at the expense of travellers' personal comfort and security.
