As the party looks toward the 2028 general elections, one name stands out with uncommon force and logic. That name is Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings. She is not just a politician. She is a symbol of continuity, integrity, competence and generational balance, and when all the factors that win elections in Ghana are placed on the table, she emerges as the best possible running mate for the NDC.

The first factor is geography and identity, because elections in Ghana are still won with regional arithmetic. Dr. Zanetor solves this puzzle in a way that no other single candidate can.

She is a daughter of three regions at once. She was born and raised in the Greater Accra Region, where she lives and where she has been elected three times as Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle. That makes her a true Accra insider who understands the urban voter. Her grandmother hails from the Volta Region, which gives her a direct blood link to the traditional stronghold of the NDC. Her mother, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, hails from the Ashanti Region, which connects her by descent to the most populous and most competitive electoral battleground in the country.

If the NDC wants to consolidate Greater Accra, energize the Volta, and make a meaningful incursion into Ashanti, it cannot find a more natural bridge than Dr. Zanetor. While other potential running mates can claim one region, she embodies three regions in one person, and that is an electoral advantage that cannot be manufactured.

The second factor is character. In a political environment where corruption has become the main weapon of attack, Dr. Zanetor is unblemished.

Since she entered active politics and won her seat in 2016, she has served three terms in Parliament. In all those years, no one has linked her to corruption, to a scandal, or to the misuse of public funds. Although she is the daughter of a former President, she has not used that legacy to enrich herself. Although she has had access to power, she has remained disciplined.

This clean record matters because the 2028 election will be fought on the question of who can be trusted to protect the public purse. When the NDC presents a running mate who has never been cited for wrongdoing, the party denies its opponents their most potent line of attack. Ghanaians will see a leader who is not coming to amass wealth but to serve.

The third factor is competence and performance. Dr. Zanetor is not just popular. She is performing.

As Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, she has brought a calm, scientific and methodical approach to a very sensitive ministry. Under her watch, the ministry has been more visible on issues of climate change, plastic pollution, environmental protection and the promotion of science and technology as drivers of development. She has shown that she can manage a complex sector, that she can work with technocrats, and that she can represent Ghana credibly on the international stage.

This is important because the office of running mate is not ceremonial. It is an office that requires a person who can actually govern. Dr. Zanetor has proven that she can.

The fourth factor, which many analysts underestimate, is the generational connection. The 2028 election will be decided by young people.

Dr. Zanetor's age, her background as a medical doctor, her calm and issue-based style of communication, and her work on environmental and health issues naturally connect her to Generation Z and to millennials. While she respects the legacy of the NDC, she does not speak in the old language of insults and aggression. She speaks in the language of solutions, of climate justice, of innovation, and of opportunity. When young voters who are frustrated with the political class look at her, they see a leader who looks like the future.

Finally, there is the matter of legacy and loyalty. Dr. Zanetor carries the Rawlings legacy, which remains deeply respected within the NDC and across Ghana. Her father, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, founded the party. Her mother was instrumental in building its women’s wing. Yet Dr. Zanetor has never used that legacy to hold the party to ransom. She has served the party faithfully in Parliament, she has defended its values, and she has remained loyal through difficult times.

If the NDC wants a running mate who can unite the old and the new, who can connect three regions without trying, who can defend the party's integrity without a scandal to explain, who can govern from day one, and who can speak to the aspirations of young Ghanaians who will decide 2028, then the choice is clear.

That choice is Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.
