The North Tongu District Assembly has mobilised GH¢1.83 million in Internally Generated Funds (IGF) as of September 2026, representing 83.2 per cent of its revised annual target of GH¢2.2 million.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for North Tongu, Mrs Victoria Amefadzi Yawa Doe, disclosed this during the Third Ordinary Meeting of the Third Session of the Fourth North Tongu District Assembly held at Battor in the Volta Region.
She explained that the Assembly initially set an IGF target of GH¢1.82 million for the 2026 fiscal year but later revised it upward to GH¢2.2 million to support key development interventions across the district.
According to Mrs Doe, although the Assembly's revenue performance has been encouraging, efforts would be intensified to improve revenue mobilisation through enhanced monitoring, supervision, and the exploration of additional revenue sources to meet the year's target.
Agriculture and Farmer Support
Touching on agriculture, the DCE said the Assembly was pursuing partnerships with private organisations to improve farmers' access to agricultural inputs, technical support, and modern farming technologies.
She identified Green Hub Company Limited, an Accra-based agricultural company, as one of the partners currently engaging farmers in rice, maize, and soybean production.
As of August 12, 2026, she said, 87 farmers, comprising 65 men and 22 women, had registered with the company, with 70 of them engaged in rice cultivation. Ten rice farmers had also received agricultural inputs and commenced planting.
Under the arrangement, Green Hub provides fertilisers, improved seeds, and liquid fertiliser on credit. Farmers make an initial payment of 35 per cent, while the remaining 65 per cent is settled with produce after harvest.
Mrs Doe further disclosed that the Assembly had initiated discussions with VIS International, an Italian non-governmental organisation, to explore possible interventions aimed at strengthening agricultural education and farmer-based organisations in the district.
The proposed partnership includes the establishment of agricultural demonstration farms in two model schools and about 25 primary schools, as well as support for approximately 15 Farmer-Based Organisations (FBOs) to enhance their capacity and farming practices.
She noted that the proposals were currently being assessed, with issues relating to water availability and soil suitability at some proposed project sites requiring further consideration.
The Department of Agriculture has also collaborated with CARE Ghana and CIHEAM BARI on training and extension programmes designed to improve farmers' knowledge and productivity.
Infrastructure Projects
On infrastructure development, the DCE announced plans to undertake several projects under the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) and the District Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT IX).
Projects earmarked under the DACF include:
- Construction of a two-unit kindergarten block at Torgorme;
- Construction of a three-unit classroom block at Zomayi D/A Junior High School;
- Construction of toilet facilities at Battor R/C Basic School, Juapong R/C Kindergarten, and Tsibukope-Tulaku;
- Construction and furnishing of a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound with two nurses' quarters at Kpekpo Horme; and
- Drilling and mechanisation of 10 boreholes in selected communities.
Under DPAT IX, the Assembly plans to construct 24 lockable stores, an eight-seater toilet facility, a borehole, a security post, and a revenue post at the Battor Market.
A community centre comprising 10 offices, five washrooms, and a conference room is also planned for Mepe, alongside the construction of two semi-detached two-bedroom bungalows for teachers at Aveyime.
