The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is expected to invite a midwife for questioning next week following a controversial TikTok livestream that captured a pregnant patient in visible distress, raising concerns about patient privacy and professional conduct.
The Ministry of Health's spokesperson, Tony Goodman, confirmed that the Council was investigating the incident and would engage the midwife to establish the circumstances surrounding the livestream.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Mr Goodman said the Council had begun following up on the matter and was expected to invite the midwife for further discussions next week.
“The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is following up on the matter concerning this midwife. I am reliably informed that she is expected to be invited by the Council next week for further engagement,” he stated.
The incident has triggered public debate over the use of social media by healthcare professionals, particularly the responsibility of medical personnel to safeguard patients' dignity, privacy and confidentiality while providing care.
Concerns have focused on whether broadcasting a pregnant patient in a vulnerable medical condition complied with the professional standards and confidentiality obligations expected of nurses and midwives.
