Sawadogoism is not a theory. It is a way of living, learned from Yacouba Sawadogo - the farmer who turned dead land into forest.
He did not do it alone. He started small, with a shovel, while people laughed. Then he partnered - with neighbours, with researchers, with Oxfam, with the state - and he kept control. He got help without surrendering ownership. He got land rights without surrendering his method.
That is Sawadogoism. Not "no help." Start small, prove it, then partner from strength - not from begging.
CORE BELIEF
African problems are solved by African solutions, with African hands, on African soil.
What is an African solution?
African does not mean made in Africa. African means _owned by Africa, fitted to Africa, controlled by Africa.
If a Chinese solar panel fits our soil, our pocket, our climate, and we own it, maintain it, and control it - it is an African solution. If a made-in-Africa project is controlled from Geneva and dies when funding dies - it is not.
Origin does not make it African. Ownership does.
We will use foreign tools without worshipping foreign tools. A phone made in China, running American software, can still carry an African idea. Use it. Do not kneel to it.
WHAT IT IS NOT?
It is NOT anti-foreign, anti-science, anti-money, or anti-education.
It IS pro-ownership, pro-action, pro-proof.
We will still partner. We will still use science. We will still need money to scale. But we will not wait for permission to start, and we will not trade ownership for help.
A shovel does not cure cancer. Community labour alone does not build a safe bridge. Sawadogoism says: start where you can, prove what you can, then partner from strength.
THE 4 LAWS
1. START - Start With The Shovel
You are not empty.
Manure, termites, hands, knowledge. You have something. You have somewhere. Start there.
One pit is better than 100 proposals. Start with what you have, where you are.
Do not write to start. Start, then write. Plant 10 trees, then write to scale to 1,000. Start without money. Scale with money - but on your terms, with proof in hand.
Digging is not only soil. Digging is any work you start with what you have, that you own, that you test, that you share fairly. A pit in the ground. A lesson in a classroom. A clinic in a village. A line of code. If you started it, if you own it, if you test it - you are digging.
Yacouba dug in the soil. But Sawadogoism is not only for the soil.
Take the young woman in Harare who has no land. She has a phone, she has WhatsApp, she has a sewing machine in her mother's house. She starts with 10 dresses. She sells 10. She proves it. She does not wait for a loan to start. She starts, then she partners from strength.
Take the coder in Lagos who has no farm. He has a laptop, he has data, he has a problem in his street - water does not come. He builds a simple app to track water trucks. He starts with one street. He proves it. He does not wait for a ministry to approve him.
Take the mechanic in Nairobi who has no title deed. He has tools, he has hands, he has a corner. He fixes 5 bikes. He proves it. He does not wait for a garage to be given to him.
They are all digging. Different soil. Same shovel. Same law: Start with what you have, where you are.
2. OWN - Protect The Digger, Not The Taker*
Sawadogoism protects the digger, not the taker.
If a woman digs and her husband steals the harvest, Sawadogoism stands with her, not with the thief. If youth dig and elders take the credit, Sawadogoism stands with the youth. If a community builds and a chief, a minister, or an NGO steals it, Sawadogoism stands with the community.
Small ownership is not automatically safe. Land can be seized. A forest can be burned. A harvest can be stolen. Sawadogoism is not just digging. It is also fighting for the right to own the land you dig, the work you do, and the harvest you grow.
What you do not own, you do not control. What you do not control, you will lose.
3. TEST AND KNOW WHEN TO STOP - Test, Do Not Just Believe*
Trust ancestral knowledge - and test it. Zaï works because it was tested for generations.
Test means: How many pits? How many seasons? What is success? What is failure?
And a real doctrine must tell you when to stop. If the pit fails for three seasons, stop digging that pit. Dig somewhere else. Dig something else. Do not confuse stubbornness with faithfulness.
A farmer who digs in the wrong soil for 20 years is not a hero. He is stubborn. Sawadogoism says: Accept laughter. Expect failure. Dig again - but dig smarter, not just harder.
If it does not fit the soil, the culture, the pocket, the climate - reject it. If it fits, use it - wherever it comes from.
4. SHARE FAIRLY - Community Is The Proposal System, But Only If It Is Fair*
Before logframes, we had Nhimbe, Nnoboa, Harambee, Ubuntu, Ajo / Esusu. Community labour, savings, knowledge. We abandoned it to beg in perfect English. Return to it.
But community is not perfect. It can be jealous. It can exploit women and youth with free labour while elders take credit. It can exclude the outsider.
Community must be fair - fair labour, shared credit, shared benefit - or it becomes exploitation with a nice name.
Fair sharing is the incentive to dig. Unfair sharing is the incentive to wait. If digging does not pay the digger, people will go back to waiting.
Fair means written. If it is not written - who dug, who owns, who gets what - it is not fair, it is hope.
Before you dig together, write it down. Even on one page. Even on a WhatsApp message that everyone can see. Who brought what? Who will do what? Who owns what is dug? Who gets what share?
If an elder refuses to write it, he is planning to steal it. If an NGO refuses to write it, it is planning to own it. If a husband refuses to write it, he is planning to take it.
Do not dig on a promise. Dig on a paper.
Bottom up, not top down. Farmer to farmer. Mother to daughter.
THE ENEMY
The Psychology of Waiting.
Foreign = proven, Local = risky. Action needs permission. Big or nothing. Proposal = achievement.
That psychology was planted by schools and aid. But the waiting is also in us. Parents who say: just get a government job. Pastors who say: just pray and wait. Youths who post about hustle instead of hustling.
And sometimes the problem is not waiting - it is being blocked. A farmer who has no land title, no water rights, no market access cannot dig his way out alone.
We must also earn trust by quality, not demand trust by identity. Sometimes local fails because quality is low. Fix the quality.
WHAT DOES A SAWADOGOIST STATE DO?
A village can start tomorrow with a shovel. A state cannot. A state starts with debt, with elections, with geopolitics. Sawadogoism does not pretend otherwise.
But before a state signs any deal, loan, or aid agreement, it must ask:
1. What will our people know after this deal?_ Capability first, infrastructure second.
2. What will we own?_ If we do not own it, we do not control it.
3. What can we maintain ourselves when the partner leaves?_ If we cannot maintain it, we should not build it.
A Sawadogoist state builds engineers, not just roads. Farmers, not just food aid. Teachers, not just classrooms. It measures success not by how much aid it attracted, but by how much aid it no longer needs.
That will be hard. A minister who delays a hospital to build engineers may lose an election. Sawadogoism does not promise easy politics. It promises honest politics.
THE TEST
1. What have you started with what you have?
2. What proof do you have?
3. What will you dig this week?
4. Who owns what you dug?
If you have no answer, you are still waiting.
THE CREED
I do not need to be funded to be fruitful.
I do not need to be approved to be active.
Waiting is surrender. Action is sovereignty.
Do not trap proposals. Trap rain._l
Sawadogoism does not yet have an answer for finance, for economics, for industry, for the city, or for enforcement. That is the next digging.
