The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, says construction of the Volivo Bridge over the River Volta is expected to commence by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
He said government had intensified engagements with its Japanese counterparts and project consultants to accelerate the processes required to move the long-awaited project into its construction phase.
Speaking at the opening of bids on Thursday, November 5, Agbodza expressed confidence that the latest milestone would pave the way for the selection of a contractor and the commencement of work.
“This will be the most beautiful engineering bridge piece on the landscape of Ghana. This process started somewhere 2015-2016. A full bidding process was carried out. We are hoping that towards the end of the year, early part of next year, actual construction work should be ready,” he said.
He explained that collaboration with the Japanese partners and consultants had helped speed up the processes leading to the latest bidding stage, which he said should have taken longer.
“We shouldn’t have been at this milestone yet, but working together with our Japanese counterparts and the consultants, we’ve been able to fast-track many of the processes leading to us having the opportunity to do the bid opening today,” he said.
Agbodza described the project as a reflection of the longstanding relationship between Ghana and Japan, expressing hope that its eventual completion would further demonstrate the strength of cooperation between the 2 countries.
He also urged the contractor who wins the bid to work diligently and ensure the project is completed within the agreed timeframe, assuring that government would provide the necessary support to facilitate its delivery.
