Preamble
Not satisfied with the recent development of his unique theorems in Medical Science, a Ghanaian professor who worked several years abroad in Uppsala in Sweden and Abo in Finland has developed an economic theorem in the Behavioral Economics that challenges the Classical Welfare Economic Theorems. What are the Welfare theorems in Economics? What were their bold claims? What does the new theorem says in the market economics and what are their significance in modern market economics?
The Classical Welfare Theorems
What are the Welfare theorems in Economics? The Fundamental Theorems of Welfare Economics relies on two fundamental theorems:
- Competitive equilibria are Pareto‑optimal under strict rationality and perfect‑market assumptions.
- Any Pareto‑optimal allocation can be achieved through redistribution followed by competitive equilibrium.
It is these bold claims that the new theorem of Behavioral economics challenges and undermine. The Prior‑Mag Theorem contrasts with these famous theorems by asserting that real‑world decisions systematically violate rationality assumptions, undermining the universality of welfare‑theorem conclusions. Instead, emotional and cognitive influences are not exceptions but core determinants of market behavior. Therefore, behavioral economics requires its own foundational theorem acknowledging these influences.
The Prior‑Mag Theorem was proposed by Professor Desmond Ayim‑Aboagye (2019), in an Economic Journal article entitles “Prior-Mag Theorems as Fundamental Theorem of Behavioral Economics “in International Journal of Emerging Trends in Economics and Management Sciences. Ayim-Aboagye argues that market decisions are systematically shaped not only by rational calculation but also by emotional, cognitive, and social‑psychological factors, crowning it as a foundational behavioral‑economic counterpart to the classical welfare theorems.
The Prior‑Mag Theorem is therefore presented as a new “fundamental theorem” within behavioral economics. This sadly weakens the foundation of the traditional assumption which had been up till now central to neoclassical and welfare economics, meaning that market outcomes are governed primarily by rational optimization. Instead, Prior-Mag asserts that sentimental, emotional, cognitive, and social influences significantly shape consumer and investor decisions. Let us briefly investigate the unique theorem's assumptions.
Core Claims of the Prior‑Mag Theorem
- First, non‑rational factors drive market behavior. Thus, decisions in consumption, investment, and risk‑taking are influenced by psychological and emotional forces, not just rational utility maximization.
- Second, consequences for prices and resource allocation are delineated: Because decisions deviate from rationality, market outcomes which includes pricing and allocation do saliently reflect behavioral biases.
- Third, priority vs. magnitude needs: The theorem notices that Individuals often choose based on emotionally charged “priority needs” rather than economically “optimal” magnitude‑based needs.
Fourth, deductive theoretical foundation nature. The theorem is developed using a deductive method intended to be empirically testable
The Theorems Significance
What does the new theorem say in the market economics and what is its significance in modern market economics? The Prior‑Mag Theorem in its purpose thus serves as a proposed foundational principle for behavioral economics, analogous in ambition to the classical fundamental theorems of welfare economics. It is built with the deductive method which makes it unique because it can be tested and falsified in comparison to the classical welfare theorems. It weakens it by presenting these essential points:
- Reframes market behavior: Positions behavioral factors as fundamental rather than peripheral.
- Challenges rational‑choice foundations: Suggests that welfare‑economic results relying on rationality may not hold in real markets.
- Expands theoretical scope: Provides a conceptual basis for integrating psychology into core economic theory.
- Implications for finance and policy: Predicts that emotional and cognitive biases systematically affect investment, pricing, and resource allocation.
Concluding Remarks
The Proof of the Prior-Mag Theorem as formulated by Professor Desmond Ayim-Aboagye will involve a methodology that differs from traditional neoclassical economic proofs. Rather than using standard market equilibrium equations, it relies on a deductive, axiomatic proof by contradiction, backed by empirical field studies of market distortions (cf. the proof by AI).The formal proof establishes that a strong psychological or social association shifts choice probability to absolute certainty, completely breaking the standard mathematical laws of utility maximization.
