The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has disclosed that preparations for the implementation of the TraffiTech-GH traffic enforcement system began under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, with pilot studies conducted in 2023.
The Akim Swedru MP said the initiative had been in development for several years before its eventual rollout by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, November 2, 2026, Mr Nyarko explained that the system was originally designed to address indiscipline among motorists and strengthen road safety.
“I remember the process started under the previous administration. A pilot, a whole-year pilot, was conducted. I remember in 2023, pilot studies were conducted, and the reason behind the introduction of the TraffiTech is to curb or to mitigate or minimise the indiscipline of drivers on our roads and also to enhance road safety on our roads,” he said.
He welcomed the introduction of the platform, describing it as a positive intervention that could encourage motorists to comply with traffic regulations and promote discipline on the roads.
However, he raised concerns about what he described as inadequate public education ahead of the system's rollout.
According to him, the government should have invested more resources in educating motorists and the general public about the platform and how it would operate.
“Something important like this TraffiTech, which will help to bring a lot of discipline on our roads and also promote road safety measures, one would have thought that the government would have spent a lot of money to educate the people. But I think the education didn’t go well,” he said.
Mr Nyarko stressed that an extensive public sensitisation campaign was necessary to ensure motorists understood the system, its operations and its importance in improving road safety.
