The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced plans to remove teachers of Twene Amanfo Senior High Technical School in Techiman from their roles as Masters on Duty following an incident in which they allegedly assaulted a student.
The Deputy Director-General in charge of Quality and Access at the GES, Dr Issahaque Munwaru, disclosed this in an interview with Joy FM, explaining that the teachers would be reprimanded and reassigned from their current responsibilities.
“The teachers would have to be reprimanded, and they are also to be taken off their positions,” he said.
Dr Munwaru said preliminary investigations indicated that the teachers assaulted the students after discovering that some of them were allegedly bullying their colleagues and extorting money from them.
He explained that the students reportedly used the metallic parts of their belts to whip colleagues who failed to pay the amounts demanded.
However, he maintained that the alleged misconduct by the students did not justify the teachers' actions, stressing that the law prohibited disciplinary measures that caused physical pain to children.
“The law does not permit anything that will inflict pain on the child,” he stated.
The GES official warned that teachers who engaged in similar acts in the future would face more severe disciplinary sanctions.
“Any further misconduct along the same line will not receive the same level. It is going to be more punitive,” he said.
Meanwhile, the GES is cooperating with security agencies investigating the incident following the arrest of the teachers by the Bono East Regional Police.
