The Auditor-General, Dr Pamela Graham, has revealed that the Audit Service recovered more than GH¢18 billion in public funds between 2022 and 2026 through its audit operations.

She further disclosed that the Service helped the country avoid losses amounting to GH¢11.7 billion in 2025 alone by detecting and preventing irregular payments.

Speaking at the African Organisation of Public Accounts Committees Conference, Dr Graham called on public institutions to act on audit recommendations by implementing corrective measures to improve accountability and ensure the effective management of state resources.

She emphasised that audit reports should not merely identify financial irregularities after they have occurred but should also provide insights to strengthen internal controls, guide policy decisions and prevent future financial lapses.

“From 2022 to date, we have actually recovered over 18 billion Ghana cedis from the work of the Auditor-General. We have saved the country about 11.7 billion from wrongful payments only in just in 2025.

“Financial statements or financial audits should not be viewed just as historic detective instruments, but be seen as providing strategic intelligence that helps future control implementations and policy formulations,” she said.

Dr Graham noted that incorporating audit findings into policy decisions and institutional reforms would promote sound governance and ensure that public funds were used responsibly.
