The Northern Regional Muslim Council of Ghana has organised a day’s symposium in Tamale to discuss practical measures to address the declining standards of education in the region.

The symposium, held at the NAGRAT Secretariat under the theme, “Combating Falling Standards of Education: The Practical Steps to Begin With,” brought together students, traditional leaders, teachers and other education stakeholders to deliberate on the challenges confronting the education sector and identify practical solutions.

Speaking to the media, the Northern Regional Chairman of the Muslim Council, Sheikh Mohammed Issah Abubakari, said the declining standards of education were a concern that required the attention of every citizen. He explained that the council organised the symposium to engage stakeholders, listen to their concerns and develop a working document to guide efforts towards improving education in the region.

Sheikh Issah stressed that the initiative would not end with the symposium, assuring participants that the council would present the document to the Ministry of Education and other relevant stakeholders for the necessary action to address the challenges identified.

The Tugu-Lana, Naa Bapre, Mahama Andani expressed concern about the attitudes of some teachers, alleging that some reported to school late and closed before the official time. He also raised concerns about what he described as inadequate support from some parents towards their children’s education.

He urged the Muslim Council to ensure that the concerns and recommendations raised during the symposium were communicated to the appropriate authorities for the necessary action.

A representative of the Northern Regional Education Directorate, Mr. Andani, commended the council for organising the symposium and reaffirmed the directorate’s commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to improve education in the region.

Some participants also shared their views on the challenges affecting education and called for collective efforts by teachers, parents, traditional authorities, government and other stakeholders to reverse the declining standards.
