Climate GMet warns of prolonged dry spells and hotter days from December to February

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has warned that Ghana should expect prolonged dry spells and above-normal temperatures between December 2026 and February 2027 as El Niño conditions continue to influence the country’s weather patterns.

Deputy Director and Head of Research and Applied Meteorology at GMet, Francisca Martey, said the country was already experiencing the effects, including unusually hot days, reduced rainfall and extended dry periods.

In an interview with Joy FM monitored by MyNewsGh, Martey said the agency’s September, October and November seasonal forecast had already predicted late rainfall onset in most parts of southern Ghana, below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures.

“By then it was still in the El Niño phase, and the forecast said we’re going to have late onsets for most parts of the south. We’re going to have long dry spells. We’re going to have below-normal rainfall,” she explained.

She said the current weather conditions matched the agency’s earlier projections, warning that the dry conditions would persist into the coming months.

“We are expecting that with this timing it will continue. The harmattan will come in, the harmattan will be drier, so we expect that December, January, February will be warmer, and the dry spell, that is the dry season, will continue,” she stated.

Martey urged the public to prepare for hotter days and dusty conditions, advising people to take precautions against the effects of dry air.

“We are going to have warm days, hot days, actually. We are to have dry air coming around us, so the wind will be dusty. We can get our nose masks on. We can keep hydrated. Let’s drink more water,” she advised.
