President John Dramani Mahama has secured key commitments from Russian President Vladimir Putin to deepen cooperation between the 2 countries in energy, defence, agriculture and education.
The agreements were reached during the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, according to a statement issued by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
A major outcome of the discussions is Russia’s commitment to partner Ghana in establishing a 2,000-megawatt nuclear power plant. The facility is expected to strengthen the country’s long-term energy security and provide a reliable foundation for its industrialisation drive.
Mr Ablakwa said the initiative would also revive the nuclear energy vision of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, whose administration began preparatory work towards developing nuclear power before the February 28, 1966 coup interrupted the process.
“This is a historic moment for our nation. What Osagyefo dreamt of decades ago, we are now bringing to fruition through this strategic partnership with the Russian Federation,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
In the area of defence, the 2 leaders agreed on a new pact under which Ghana is expected to acquire strategic military equipment to enhance the operational capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The 2 countries also agreed to strengthen agricultural cooperation, particularly in grain production and fertiliser supply. The partnership is expected to support local farmers and contribute to improving Ghana’s food security.
On education, Russia has pledged to increase scholarship opportunities for Ghanaian students as part of efforts to expand academic cooperation between the 2 countries.
Mr Ablakwa noted that Ghana currently ranks second among African countries benefiting from Russian scholarship programmes.
He described the outcomes of the meeting as evidence of Ghana’s renewed diplomatic engagement and its determination to pursue strategic partnerships that translate into practical benefits for its citizens.
