Two teachers of Techiman Senior High School in the Bono East Region have been arrested following allegations that they assaulted a 17-year-old student in an incident that has sparked public outrage after footage of the incident went viral.
The suspects have been identified as Jerry Jones Owusu Bekoe, 37, an English Language teacher, and Ameyaw Adusa, 44, an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) teacher. They are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
In a statement dated November 1, 2026, the Bono East Regional Police Command confirmed that the two teachers were arrested on the same day.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred on October 23, 2026, at about 4 p.m. on the school premises, when the teachers allegedly confronted and assaulted the Form Three student.
The police said the alleged assault followed claims that the student had earlier attacked 2 Form One students.
The incident attracted widespread attention after a video purportedly showing the assault circulated on social media. The footage showed 2 men physically attacking the student, with one of them appearing to step on his head.
The incident has raised concerns over student safety and the use of physical punishment by teachers in educational institutions.
Education Ministry directs GES to investigate
The Ministry of Education had begun taking steps to investigate the matter before the police announced the arrests.
Deputy Education Minister, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, said the video had been referred to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) for an urgent investigation on the instructions of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.
In a statement shared on social media, Dr Apaak said the Director-General had also been directed to ensure that appropriate sanctions were applied to anyone found culpable.
He stressed that misconduct would not be tolerated from any member of the school community, including teaching and non-teaching staff, students and parents.
GES initiates disciplinary process
In a separate statement issued on October 31, 2026, the GES disclosed that the school's disciplinary committee had conducted an initial hearing into the incident.
The committee is expected to forward its findings to the school management through the Regional Directorate for further action.
The Service also confirmed that the affected student had received medical attention and was responding positively to treatment.
It appealed to the public to remain calm as investigations into the incident continued.
Police arrange additional support for victim
Meanwhile, the Bono East Regional Police Command said it was making arrangements to provide the victim with additional medical and psychological support.
The Command assured the public that investigations were ongoing and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding students.
