The NDC Professional Forum Russia (NDC ProForum Russia) has honoured President John Dramani Mahama, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Ghana's Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Dr Koma Steem Jehu-Appiah, in recognition of their contributions to Ghana-Russia relations.
A report dated October 31, 2026, featured a photograph of President Mahama receiving a framed citation of honour from a representative of the forum, highlighting what supporters describe as strengthening diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
Honours Follow High-Level Diplomatic Engagement
The recognition comes on the heels of a busy period in Ghana-Russia relations.
President Mahama recently arrived in Moscow to lead Ghana's delegation to the third Russia-Africa Summit, while Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed plans for a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During the visit, President Mahama was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the People's Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University), a development that attracted significant public and diplomatic attention.
The visit has been interpreted by some analysts as signalling a more assertive engagement with Russia, while others see it as part of Ghana's broader strategy of maintaining relations with diverse international partners.
Ambassador's Links to the Forum
Ghana's Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Dr Koma Steem Jehu-Appiah, has longstanding ties to the NDC Professionals Forum, having previously served as its Secretary-General before his diplomatic appointment.
Dr Jehu-Appiah assumed office in Moscow after presenting his letters of accreditation on October 10, 2025. He also led Ghana's diplomatic team in welcoming President Mahama upon his arrival in the Russian capital for the summit.
His recognition by the forum therefore reflects both his diplomatic role and his longstanding association with the organisation.
Recognition and the Foreign Policy Debate
Supporters of the citation argue that it acknowledges Ghana's foreign policy approach, which Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has consistently described as one of "positive neutrality."
Under this approach, Ghana seeks to maintain constructive relations with all international partners while advancing cooperation in areas such as trade, energy, education, technology and investment.
President Mahama has similarly emphasised Russia's longstanding relationship with Ghana, noting that cooperation between the two countries could be expanded in sectors including agriculture, science, technology and education.
Questions Over Perception
The honours have also sparked discussion among political observers.
While supporters regard the recognition as a celebration of diplomatic engagement, critics may question whether honours conferred by a politically affiliated group abroad align comfortably with Ghana's stated policy of neutrality, particularly at a time when Russia's international partnerships remain under close scrutiny by Western governments.
The citation itself does not address these concerns. However, the recognition is likely to fuel ongoing debate about Ghana's evolving relationship with Moscow and how that relationship is perceived both at home and abroad.
