Getting a Schengen visa is far harder for West Africans than for most travellers. The European Commission published its 2025 Schengen visa statistics on 28 May 2026, and the global refusal rate was 14.6%, about one in seven applications.

Senegal: more than one in two refused
Senegal's refusal rate rose to 51.9% in 2025 from 46.8% the year before. It was one of the steepest rates recorded anywhere, alongside Burundi at 53.4%. Senegal's rate is nearly four times the world average.

Ghana and Nigeria are not spared
The highest rates in 2025 included Nigeria (47.9%), Ghana (46.5%) and Angola (45.4%). African applicants are refused at roughly two to three times the global rate. For Ghanaian readers, this means nearly one in two local applicants goes home with a refusal.

Abidjan: a French consulate under scrutiny

The French consulate in Abidjan refused 33.5% of applications, which is 20,496 refusals out of 62,786. France is a leading destination for Francophone West Africans, so refusals at this scale affect students, traders, workers and families across the sub-region.

Belgium: a high rate among issuing states

Belgium had a 24.6% refusal rate in 2024 on 255,564 applications. The pattern is not limited to one consulate, because some of the largest application volumes meet some of the highest rejection rates.

The cost of refusal
Refusal does not always mean the applicant was unqualified. HelloSafe lists the top reasons as insufficient financial resources (21%), non-compliant insurance (15%) and doubts about the applicant's return (12%).

The expense is real, because fees are not refunded. HelloSafe estimates that refused applications cost applicants about €329 million in 2025, roughly €185 per rejected file.

Way forward
African governments and bodies such as ECOWAS could press for clearer refusal reasons, consistent decisions across consulates and better appeal channels. Applicants can reduce risk with complete documentation, compliant insurance and early applications. European governments defend these controls as necessary for migration and security management.

As mobility stays central to Africa-Europe relations, these figures belong on the diplomatic agenda.
