I'm assuming you mean President Mahama's latest "risk" remark, made to Ghanaians in Moscow. He said he is prepared to face the risks of championing African unity, even if it means a fate like that of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
What he said
The remarks came when he met the Ghanaian community in Moscow during his visit, in a video shared on Facebook on 30 October 2026. He recalled that Nkrumah, overthrown in the 1966 coup and forced into exile, believed many more people who shared his vision would follow. Mahama said: "I think he was referring to people like me."
The risk he named
Mahama acknowledged that standing up for Africa could carry serious risks, including political overthrow and assassination. In other words, the risk is the personal and political price a leader can pay for pushing African unity against powerful interests. Nkrumah's 1966 overthrow is the precedent he pointed to.
A vow to keep speaking out
He added that he would keep speaking boldly on issues affecting Africa, even when it makes some people uncomfortable. This fits his recent messaging on the continent's place in the world. At the FT Africa Summit, he said the global financial order penalises African economies with an unjustified risk premium, with sovereigns borrowing at rates up to eight times higher than Western peers. In June he told UK investors: "Africa is not a risk to be managed. Africa is an opportunity to be seized."
Why it matters
The remark has two layers. Symbolically, it places Mahama in the Nkrumahist tradition just as Ghana deepens engagement with Russia. Politically, critics may ask what concrete threat he has in mind, since he named no one. Supporters will read it as a statement of conviction ahead of Ghana's African Union chairmanship in 2027.
Reading it carefully
Mahama did not accuse any state or group of plotting against him. The "risk" is the historical and general danger of defying powerful interests, not a specific threat. Journalists should avoid presenting it as a claim of a plot.
