PRESEC benefits from W Sports International sponsorship

The Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon, has received a major boost to its sporting development following a sponsorship package from W Sports International, in an initiative aimed at modernising sports in Ghana’s second-cycle institutions and creating opportunities for young talents to excel beyond the classroom.

The sponsorship, presented by the Chairman of W Sports International, Nana Bediako Brogya Sarpong, the Dompiahene of Agogo Asante Akyim Traditional Area, makes PRESEC the 21st school in Ghana to join the W Sports family and the first school in the Greater Accra Region to benefit from the organisation’s sports kit sponsorship programme.

The presentation, held at a colourful but brief ceremony, brought together the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, the Headmaster of PRESEC, Mr. David Odjija members of the Odadie fraternity, teachers, students and other distinguished personalities.

In a remarkable demonstration of friendship, generosity and national unity, Nana Bediako Brogya Sarpong, a proud alumnus of Prempeh College, used the occasion to highlight the importance of looking beyond traditional school rivalries to support the collective development of Ghanaian students.

Addressing the gathering, he acknowledged the longstanding rivalry between PRESEC and Prempeh College in academics, particularly the National Science and Maths Quiz, as well as in sporting competitions. However, he stressed that such healthy competition should never become a barrier to recognising excellence or supporting one another.

He explained that his decision to extend the W Sports sponsorship to PRESEC was motivated by the school's outstanding record in academic and extracurricular activities, including its achievements in the National Science and Maths Quiz, robotics, soccer, hockey, basketball and debating competitions. According to him, excellence deserves recognition, irrespective of the institution that produces it.

Nana Bediako Brogya Sarpong also paid glowing tribute to his friend, brother and mentor, Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong, the Global President of Odadee and Board Chairman of PRESEC, describing him as an example of leadership that transcends institutional boundaries. He recalled how Dr Ofori Sarpong previously supported the robotics team of Prempeh College when the school needed assistance, despite the longstanding rivalry between the two institutions.

He said the gesture demonstrated that genuine leadership was about identifying opportunities to empower young people rather than allowing school affiliations to determine who deserved support. He noted that the sponsorship to PRESEC was, in part, a reflection of that same spirit of generosity and a practical demonstration of the importance of reciprocating kindness.

"Today, therefore, is not just a donation. It is a statement that when it comes to developing Ghanaian youth through sports, there is no PRESEC and there is no Prempeh College. There is only one Ghana," he declared, drawing attention to the need for collaboration among educational institutions.

Under the first phase of the sponsorship, W Sports International presented PRESEC with high-jump and pole-vault landing foam, home and away soccer uniforms, home and away basketball jerseys, tracksuits, soccer balls and polo shirts for sports officials. The package is expected to improve training conditions, strengthen the school's sporting identity and provide students with the necessary equipment to compete effectively.

The Chairman further announced that the initiative would be sustained through a second phase, which would include track and field vests, camp wear and additional athletic equipment. He emphasised that the intervention was not a one-off donation but part of a broader commitment to supporting sports development in Ghanaian senior high schools.

Receiving the items on behalf of the school, Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong expressed profound appreciation to Nana Bediako Brogya Sarpong and the entire W Sports International team, describing the initiative as a laudable intervention that would significantly strengthen the school's sporting activities. He said being selected as the first beneficiary in Greater Accra was a great honour for the PRESEC and the wider Odadee fraternity.

Dr Ofori Sarpong observed that although PRESEC had established itself as a centre of academic excellence, the sponsorship presented another opportunity for the school to demonstrate its strength in sports. He noted that the donated equipment, particularly the soccer and basketball uniforms and high-jump landing facilities, would help identify, develop and nurture sporting talents who could represent the school and Ghana at higher levels.

He commended Nana Bediako Brogya Sarpong for his vision of modernising sports in second-cycle institutions and assured W Sports International that the items would be properly maintained and put to their intended use. He also expressed anticipation for the second phase of the partnership, urging the organisation to sustain its support for the school.

The donated items were formally handed over by Nana Bediako Brogya Sarpong to Dr Ofori Sarpong, who subsequently presented them to the Headmaster of PRESEC, Mr. David Odjija , for the school's use. The exchange symbolised a shared commitment between the two institutions to advancing education and sporting excellence.

Both leaders used the occasion to encourage PRESEC students to take advantage of the opportunity and translate the support into outstanding performances. While Nana Bediako Brogya Sarpong urged the students to wear their jerseys with pride and defend the school's legacy as the Blue Magicians, Dr Ofori Sarpong reminded them that the provision of quality equipment placed a greater responsibility on them to produce results.

The W Sports International initiative is expected to contribute to a new approach to sports development in Ghana's second-cycle schools, where students are equipped not only to pursue academic excellence but also to discover and develop their sporting potential. Beyond the material support, the PRESEC sponsorship sends a powerful message about friendship, institutional cooperation and the responsibility of successful individuals to invest in the next generation. As the two distinguished leaders demonstrated, the future of Ghanaian education and sports will be stronger when excellence is celebrated and opportunities are extended beyond traditional boundaries.

The Headmaster of PRESEC, Mr. David Odjija appealed to the Minister of Sports and Recreation and W Sports International to support the school with a four-lane athletics track to enhance the training and performance of its athletes. He noted that PRESEC had maintained its dominance in the 4x100-metre relay and basketball competitions in the Greater Accra Region for several years, with some students representing the region at national competitions. He, however, explained that the absence of a standard athletics track affected the students' ability to compete effectively on standard fields, despite their talents and achievements.

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, congratulated W Sports International and its Board Chairman, Nana Bediako Brogya Sarpong, for selecting PRESEC as the 21st beneficiary school nationwide and the first in the Greater Accra Region under the initiative. He described the donation of footballs, basketballs, tracksuits and a high-jump landing mat as practical investments in the development of young sporting talents.

Responding to the Headmaster's appeal, the Minister assured the school that the concern had been noted and called for collaboration to improve its sporting infrastructure. He further emphasised the need to strengthen the connection between inter-house competitions, inter-school sports, district and regional competitions, national school sports festivals and university-level competitions to create a more effective pathway for nurturing sporting talents in Ghana.
