The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, has claimed that he initiated the process that led to the reconstruction of the La General Hospital.
The former Health Minister said his decision followed concerns raised by the hospital's management about the deteriorating condition of the facility during his time as a medical officer there.
Speaking on Accra-based Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana programme on Friday, October 30, he said, “I am the originator, the brain behind La General Reconstruction."
Dr Okoe Boye, who said he worked at the hospital before entering Parliament, recalled that parts of the ceiling regularly fell off during ward rounds in 2016.
He described the facility as being in a poor state and said the hospital's management had raised concerns that the building could collapse and endanger staff and patients.
According to him, the medical director, nurse manager and other members of the management team appealed for government intervention after a programme organised by the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects for pregnant women.
He said he subsequently used his contacts to draw the attention of government officials to the condition of the hospital.
Meanwhile, as of October 30, 2026, the reconstruction of La General Hospital is still ongoing, and the government is targeting completion by the end of 2027, with commissioning expected in January 2028.
During an inspection of the project on October 29, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said the €50 million project was progressing but required the contractor to accelerate work.
He disclosed that approximately €15 million had been paid so far.

This is nonsense. Is it politics that makes this person so foolish or he is naturally stupid? How can you be the BRAIN behind the reconstruction of the hospital when your claim is, "...use your contact to draw the attention of the government officials to the condition of the hospital." You mean, you INITIATED the DESTRUCTION of the La General Hospital. I am glad this thing call Okoe Boye is not a medical practitioner any longer.
