The National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mavis Hawa Koomson, has explained why she selected former Akwatia MP Mercy Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Sey, as her Deputy National Women’s Organiser.
Speaking on Asaasepa Radio, Hawa Koomson said Ama Sey’s hard work, political resilience and representation of the Eastern Region influenced her decision.
“She is representing the Eastern Region, and secondly, she is a very hardworking woman,” Hawa Koomson said.
She described Ama Sey as a dedicated party member who takes assignments seriously, recalling how she travelled late into the night to carry out party work.
According to Hawa Koomson, Ama Sey’s commitment to the NPP and her ability to withstand pressure made her suitable for the position.
“Ama Sey is no pushover. You cannot intimidate her,” she said, emphasising the former MP’s toughness and determination.
Hawa Koomson also pointed to Ama Sey’s 2016 parliamentary victory as evidence of her ability to connect with ordinary people and win grassroots support.
Ama Sey, a hairdresser and businesswoman, defeated incumbent MP Baba Jamal of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to win the Akwatia seat in the 2016 election.
Hawa Koomson explained that the appointment was based not only on regional representation but also on Ama Sey’s political record and her appeal among grassroots supporters.
She further described the former MP as a respected figure with a promising future in the party, expressing confidence in her ability to contribute to the NPP women’s wing as it prepares for its political activities.
