Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has urged contractors working on the €50 million La General Hospital project to accelerate construction and meet the January 2028 commissioning deadline, stressing the need to bring the facility into operation on schedule.
The project includes the supply and installation of medical equipment.
“We can speed up so that we can beat the deadline,” he said during an inspection of the project, where he acknowledged progress made but called for a faster pace of work to ensure the hospital is ready to serve the large population that depends on it.
Mr Akandoh rejected payment delays as a reason for slow progress, insisting that government had been meeting its payment obligations. He said the latest interim payment certificate had been submitted and forwarded to the Ministry of Finance for processing.
The Minister also called for a review of the proposed capacity of the hospital’s emergency department to ensure it can meet demand and help ease the pressure on emergency beds in health facilities.
Mr Akandoh pledged to continue monitoring construction until the hospital is completed and fully operational.
