TUTAG gives GTEC two weeks to secure clearance for post-retirement staff payments

The Technical University Teachers' Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has given the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) a two-week deadline to obtain financial clearance for the payment of staff working under post-retirement contracts, warning that it could resume its strike if the matter is not resolved.

The association’s General Secretary, Dr Francis Nustugah, said the deadline was agreed upon during discussions with GTEC and the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) on Wednesday, October 28.

Speaking to Citi News, Dr Nustugah indicated that TUTAG was considering suspending the industrial action to give the relevant institutions time to address the outstanding payment concerns.

He clarified, however, that the strike remained in force pending formal approval by the association’s congress at a meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 29.

According to him, although the Finance Minister did not attend Wednesday’s meeting, assurances were given that arrangements would be made for the parties to meet him directly to discuss the issue and facilitate Cabinet approval and the required financial clearance within two weeks.

Dr Nustugah cautioned that failure to secure the clearance within the stipulated period could trigger a return to the strike. He said the association would first investigate the reasons for any delay and identify the obstacles before deciding on its next move.

“If the two weeks comes and the clearance is not given for the people to be paid, yes, what we would do on our part is to find out what is happening, what are the bottlenecks and all of that. The moment we are facing challenges nothing stops us from returning to our strike,” he said.

He stressed that any decision to halt the strike would amount only to a temporary suspension, not a permanent termination of the industrial action.

TUTAG expects the outstanding clearance and payment issues to be resolved within the two-week period, failing which the association could reconsider its position.
