A man suspected of carrying out a shooting in the Paris suburbs that killed one person and wounded five will appear before investigating judges on Thursday, with prosecutors requesting that he be held in pre-trial detention, France's anti-terrorism prosecutor said.

The 39-year-old, identified in part as Kevin T., admitted to targeting people who were Muslim or of African or North African origin.

According to a source close to the investigation, the suspect was undergoing treatment for schizophrenia, AFP reported.

He was arrested on Friday with a submachine gun and tear gas grenades in his car, shortly after a vehicle drove through the working-class towns of Trappes and neighbouring La Verrière and shots were fired at victims.

French President Emmanuel Macron had branded the shooting a "racist terrorist attack", as most of the victims were from immigrant backgrounds.
