The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called for stronger regional defence cooperation through the development of indigenous defence industries to address security challenges.
The ECOWAS Commission made the call at the Africa International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX), which is being held in Lagos, Nigeria, from October 26 to 30, 2026.
The event has brought together political leaders, defence policymakers, military commanders, defence industry players, researchers and security experts from Africa and beyond.
Delivering a keynote address at the opening ceremony, ECOWAS Commission President General Birame Diop commended Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to regional peace, security and integration.
General Diop described AFRIDEX as a timely demonstration of Nigeria’s longstanding leadership in promoting peace, security and integration across the region.
The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of President Tinubu, who was represented by the President of Nigeria’s Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
The exhibition provides a platform for stakeholders to discuss defence cooperation and the development of local defence industries as part of efforts to strengthen Africa’s security capabilities.
