A Dambai Circuit Court has remanded four persons into police custody over disturbances at Dwabrem, Worawora, in the Oti Region, amid tensions surrounding the commencement of rites for the Akwantutenten Festival.
In a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police John Nchor, the Oti Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, the law enforcement agency noted that the accused persons are Kwame Aboagye Ahenkroa, 55; Prince Asante, 27; Daniel Wiafe, 20; and Kwabena Nsimbo, 22.
According to the Command, the four were remanded on Tuesday, October 27, in connection with the incident, which occurred on October 24, with their next court appearance scheduled for November 17.
“The incident involved the burning of vehicle tyres and other acts of violence amid tensions surrounding the commencement of rites for the Akwantutenten Festival, reportedly over claims that a High Court injunction had been obtained to restrain the celebration,” the police statement said.
The police said personnel deployed to the scene extinguished the burning tyres and restored order.
The disturbances occurred against the backdrop of a chieftaincy dispute, with the reported claim of a High Court injunction contributing to tensions surrounding the festival rites.
On October 26, the Oti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) met representatives of the disputing families and directed them to seek redress through the appropriate courts and Houses of Chiefs.
The Council also stressed that the dispute must be resolved through lawful means and that those arrested in connection with the disturbances should be dealt with in accordance with the law.
“The Oti Regional Police Command urges all parties to remain calm, exercise restraint and respect lawful processes to preserve peace and security in Worawora,” the statement added.
