Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has highlighted improvements in Ghana’s economic conditions under the Mahama-led government, citing falling inflation, a stronger cedi, expanding economic activity and an improved debt situation.

She said the gains are helping to restore economic stability and rebuild confidence among businesses and households, although the government had not yet achieved all its targets.

The Vice President made the remarks on Wednesday, October 28, at the NDC’s 2026 LAB Policy Colloquium, organised to review the performance of the Mahama administration and assess the implementation of its policy programme.

“We have not reached our destination, but inflation has fallen substantially, the cedi has strengthened, economic activity has expanded, and the country’s debt situation has improved,” she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang recalled that the government assumed office amid high inflation, debt difficulties and declining purchasing power, which placed considerable pressure on households and businesses.

She urged party members and government officials to recognise the efforts made to stabilise the economy.

According to her, the government’s programme extends beyond economic stabilisation to infrastructure development, healthcare access and social protection.

She cited the Big Push infrastructure programme, which includes major road projects across the country, as part of efforts to improve infrastructure and support economic development.

The Vice President also highlighted the government’s free primary healthcare initiative and the implementation of the Mahama Cares programme as measures aimed at improving access to healthcare.

She further pointed to the launch of the Social Protection Act and regulations supporting the implementation of the Affirmative Action Act, alongside education, employment and enterprise development initiatives intended to expand opportunities for women and young people.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the government’s performance should be assessed by considering both the progress made and the work that remains to be done.
