Beyond Finished Goods: What the Russia-Africa Media Forum Says About Moscow's Pitch

Feature Article Beyond Finished Goods: What the Russia-Africa Media Forum Says About Moscows Pitch

Ahead of the Third Russia-Africa Summit, which opens in Moscow today, the Russia-Africa Media Forum has set out the economic message Moscow wants to carry into the talks.

According to a report by Makiza Micheline Latifa in The Insight , discussions at the forum held at the National Centre Russia held that Russia's economic cooperation with African countries should go beyond supplying finished products.

The report said it should include building local expertise, transferring technology and strengthening domestic productive capacity . The forum was part of a press tour organized for visiting journalists.

Scale of the forum. The Russia-Africa Media Forum opened in Moscow on Monday and brought together more than 200 participants from 46 African countries. That makes it one of the largest gatherings of African media professionals Moscow has hosted around a summit.

Why the message matters. Industrial capacity and technology transfer are what many African governments say they want from external partners, instead of raw-material exports and imported goods.

Mahama made a similar point at the Financial Times Africa Summit in London last week when he urged value addition at home. Russian experts have also described technology transfer as a proposal, and said they want African partners to review it and suggest where Russia can be useful. The test is whether the Moscow summit turns that language into funded projects, timelines and local ownership.

The media dimension. A media forum is also an instrument of influence. Sessions at the 2023 forum included "Sovereign Media and the Fight Against Disinformation" and "Multipolar Information World", which shows that information cooperation is a core part of Russia's Africa strategy and not a side event.

Journalists on press tours should keep their editorial independence, report the summit on its merits and verify claims about investment and cooperation against official texts and independent sources. African audiences are best served by coverage that reports both the opportunities and the gaps.

What to watch. Three things will show whether the forum's message becomes policy.

The first is whether the final declaration and the 2027-2029 action plan name concrete industrial and technology-transfer projects.

The second is whether African governments seek local-content and skills-training commitments in their bilateral talks with Putin.

The third is whether the media on both sides report the outcome critically.
