The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a 52-year-old man, identified as Ibrahim Saani, for allegedly possessing 37 parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp at New York, near Airport Junction.
The police noted that the suspect was arrested on Sunday, October 25, during a police operation conducted around 7:00 p.m. following intelligence received by the command.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect may have been distributing suspected narcotic substances in New York and surrounding communities, with police intelligence indicating that he allegedly feigned madness to conceal his activities.
A statement issued by the Tema Regional Police Command on Tuesday, October 27, and signed by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs for the Tema Regional Police Command, said officers retrieved a bag containing the suspected drugs and a crusher during the operation.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect may have been involved in the distribution of suspected narcotic substances within New York and surrounding areas. Intelligence further indicated that he allegedly feigns madness to conceal his suspected illicit activities,” the statement said.
The suspect was subsequently escorted to the police station with the exhibits for further investigations.
The police said the substances would be forwarded for forensic examination to establish their nature and assist investigations into the possible involvement of other persons.
“The suspect and his accomplices, if any, will be arraigned before the court as soon as investigations are completed,” the statement added.
The Tema Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against involvement in narcotics-related activities and urged anyone with credible information about the possession, distribution or trafficking of illicit drugs to report to the nearest police station.
