Chinese Navy Hospital Ship "Auspicious Ark" Docks in Tema on First Ghana Mission

Chinese Navy Hospital Ship Auspicious Ark Docks in Tema on First Ghana Mission

The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy hospital ship Auspicious Ark (Hull 868) arrived at Tema Port on Friday, 23 October 2026, for a seven-day friendly visit and humanitarian medical mission under Mission Harmony 2026 . The programme runs until 30 October.

The Flag Officer Commanding the Eastern Naval Command, Commodore Raymond Kyaano, welcomed the ship on behalf of the Chief of the Defence Staff. Representatives of the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority attended the opening ceremony, along with the visiting Chinese delegation. China's ambassador, the defence attaché and members of the Chinese community also took part.

The ship is to provide free medical care to Ghanaians with conditions requiring specialized treatment . Outreach teams will also visit the China-Ghana Friendship Hospital and a military camp for consultations and exchanges with Ghanaian health personnel. The programme includes health education at the Tema Naval Base School and a friendly football match with Ghanaian servicemen.

Officials described the vessel as newly commissioned and on its maiden international visit, saying Ghana's place among its first destinations reflects the friendship between the two countries. It is China's second purpose-built ocean-going hospital ship, officially commissioned as Silk Road Ark and a sister ship to Peace Ark.

Why it matters
The mission combines health care with military and diplomatic outreach. For Ghana, it adds specialist capacity and professional exchange. For China, it extends its medical diplomacy in West Africa, a region where Russia, Türkiye and Western partners are also competing for influence. Ghanaians will watch two things: who qualifies for treatment, and what follow-up care patients receive once the ship sails.

Points to check before filing
"First visit" claim. Xinhua, the Ghana Armed Forces and others call this the first Chinese naval hospital ship visit to Ghana . The Ghana News Agency says Peace Ark visited in 2017. I haven't resolved this, so either say "first visit by this ship" or verify the 2017 visit.

Ambassador's name. The Ghanaian Times names him Cong Song, while GNA names Tong Defa. I left the name out.

Arrival time. The reports give roughly 09:50 to 10:00 on 23 October. Xinhua is dated 24 October, but the arrival was Friday the 23rd.

Global Mercy. Your title says "too", which suggests you want to set this beside the Mercy Ships' Global Mercy. I haven't confirmed its current status at Tema, so I didn't state it as fact. Tell me if you want that paragraph.
