Founder and Leader of the United Party, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has said he would be willing to return to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if invited to lead the party as its flagbearer.
The former Trade Minister left the NPP in 2023 after raising concerns about what he described as unfair treatment during his time in the party.
He subsequently contested the 2024 general elections as an independent candidate under the Movement for Change before going on to establish the United Party.
Speaking in an interview with DW Africa, Alan Kyerematen said the NPP could improve its chances of winning the 2028 general elections by embracing the political ideals he associates with the United Party.
He made the remarks while responding to a question about whether he would accept an invitation to rejoin the NPP as its flagbearer.
“Yes, if as a flagbearer, okay, I'm controlling the party, then I know it is the only way that they can win power,” he said.
He said his commitment to the United Party’s values remained firm, describing them as essential to securing electoral victory in 2028.
“I have made a public declaration that I'm so committed to the values of the United Party. In fact, that is the only way they [NPP] can win the 2028 general election,” he stated.
The former Trade Minister stressed that the NPP and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) could not guarantee a prosperous future for Ghana, arguing that the country needed a different political approach.
