Executive Director of the Centre for Democratic Development Ghana (CDD-Ghana), Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh, has criticised the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the handling of the sexual abuse allegations at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

This follows an investigative report by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, which detailed allegations of sexual abuse against female students at the school involving the headmaster.

The number of students who have reportedly come forward with allegations has risen to 19, according to the journalist.

The allegations include rape, sexual harassment and other forms of sexual misconduct.

Prof H.K Prempeh's criticism follows claims by the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Jacob Anaba, that 38 teachers were asked to leave the school after speaking against the headmaster.

In a social media post on Tuesday, October 20, Prof. Prempeh described the situation as “despicable” and called on the relevant institutions to explain their actions.

“Despicable! Ghana Education Service and the NDC have a lot of explaining to do. NAGRAT should not let this end here, or they would be letting their members down!” he wrote.

He also criticised what he described as the increasing influence of partisan politics in public institutions, arguing that teachers and other public servants should not allow party loyalty to undermine their professional responsibilities.

Prof. Prempeh said the handling of the matter reflects a broader problem with political interference in public institutions, which he believes undermines accountability and national development.

“When we tell you partisans to take your morally bankrupt party politics out of our public institutions, you push back with all manner of backward nonsense,” he stated.

He called on NAGRAT to pursue the matter and ensure that the concerns raised by the teachers are not ignored.
