An electrical fire suspected to have been caused by power fluctuation has destroyed an MTN mast power plant at Begoro-Kristom in the Eastern Region, with the estimated cost of damage put at GH¢200,000.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said its Begoro Fire Station responded to the incident near Presby School on Saturday, October 17.
According to the service, firefighters arrived at the scene at 12:31 p.m., six minutes after being dispatched, and found fire engulfing the mast’s power plant.
A notice shared by the GNFS Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer on Tuesday, October 20, stated that the crew ensured that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) power supply was disconnected before deploying a hose line to fight the fire.
The fire was brought under control at 12:47 p.m. and completely extinguished at 12:50 p.m.
Preliminary investigations suggested that power fluctuation caused the outbreak.
No casualties were recorded, but the power plant was completely destroyed, resulting in the estimated GH¢200,000 loss.
