Bekwai MP Ralph Poku-Adusei cracks the whip on sanitation funds, says accountability cannot be optional

Lawyer Ralph Poku-Adusei, Member of Parliament for Bekwai Constituency and Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources, has issued a firm call for accountability in the management of public funds allocated to sanitation projects.

The outspoken legislator made the position known in a statement shared on his official Facebook page while participating in the committee’s ongoing oversight tour of the Central Region.

The exercise, which includes engagements with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Takoradi, is focused on examining the utilisation of the 10 per cent sanitation allocation and assessing progress on projects funded through the allocation.

Mr Poku-Adusei has made it clear that the use of public funds must not escape scrutiny, stressing that those entrusted with state resources must demonstrate that the money is delivering the intended results.

“Public funds must deliver results, and accountability cannot be optional,” he declared.

No Excuses for Poor Project Delivery
The Bekwai MP said he remains committed to asking difficult questions, scrutinising audit findings and demanding answers wherever concerns emerge over expenditure and project implementation.

His position places the utilisation of sanitation funds under parliamentary scrutiny, with particular attention to whether allocations are translating into tangible improvements in sanitation infrastructure and the living conditions of residents.

For Mr Poku-Adusei, the issue goes beyond the release of funds. The critical question is whether the resources allocated are producing the desired results in communities.

He stressed that sanitation funding must serve its intended purpose of promoting cleaner and healthier environments rather than becoming an exercise in expenditure without measurable impact.

Poku-Adusei Puts MMDAs Under the Spotlight

Through the oversight exercise, the committee is engaging the relevant local authorities to examine their management of the sanitation allocation and the progress of projects financed through it.

The engagements provide an opportunity to scrutinise spending, review audit findings and seek explanations on matters requiring clarification.

Mr Poku-Adusei's message is clear: public officials must be prepared to account for how public money is spent and what it achieves.

He reaffirmed his commitment to effective parliamentary oversight, emphasising the need to ensure that sanitation resources deliver real benefits to the people.

As the committee continues its engagements in the Central Region, attention will remain on the utilisation of the 10 per cent sanitation allocation, project implementation and the accountability of institutions responsible for managing the funds.
