President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Finance Minister to allocate more than GH¢200 million in the 2027 Budget to complete the long-delayed Police Hospital Expansion Project, following Cabinet’s decision to terminate the existing contract.

The President said the project, which has been stalled for 22 years amid disagreements with the contractor and rising costs, would now be completed by the government.

“The contract has been going on for 22 years. We have finally brought it to an end. We’re going to complete it ourselves, and so the minister will provide about a little over GH¢200 million that is required to complete it and bring it into service before the end of next year.”

President Mahama made the announcement in Accra on Tuesday, October 13, when he commissioned a new 85-bed ward complex at the hospital, named after the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

He said completing the expansion project would significantly increase the hospital’s capacity and improve healthcare delivery for police personnel and other patients.

According to the President, the expansion would add 106 beds to the facility, taking its total bed capacity to more than 300.

The completed project is expected to feature a 12-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a new Accident and Emergency Centre, 11 consulting rooms and four paediatric consulting rooms. It will also include modern Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scan equipment, three general surgical theatres, an orthopaedic theatre, a specialised theatre and an endoscopy unit.

The project will further provide a 222-capacity mortuary to strengthen the hospital’s support services.

As part of efforts to improve emergency response and support the newly commissioned ward complex, President Mahama donated two ambulances to the Police Hospital.

He stressed that prompt medical attention was essential, particularly for police officers injured at crime scenes and patients who require urgent transfers to other facilities.

The ambulances, he said, would help ensure the safe transportation of patients and facilitate timely referrals and treatment.

However, he emphasised that the vehicles must be supported by trained personnel, appropriate life-support equipment and regular maintenance to ensure their effectiveness.

President Mahama described the commissioning of the ward complex as evidence of the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and improving the welfare of security personnel.

He congratulated the Ghana Police Service and other stakeholders who contributed to the completion of the facility, urging them to protect the investment.

“Let us preserve this investment and ensure it delivers reliable care for many years to come,” he said.

The President expressed optimism that the facility would provide healing, hope and renewed strength to people seeking medical care at the hospital.

The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said President Mahama’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and the welfare of security personnel continued to make a lasting impact on the country.

He described the new facility as a visible demonstration of that commitment and the President’s determination to build a stronger and more inclusive Ghana.

For his part, the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, expressed appreciation to President Mahama for his continued support for the Ghana Police Service and concern for the welfare of police personnel.

He assured the President that the Police Administration would continue to implement initiatives to improve officers’ health, welfare and operational effectiveness.
