President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to deliver an additional 40 armoured vehicles to the Ghana Police Service in the coming weeks as part of efforts to strengthen the Service’s operational capacity.
He said the government was also procuring additional body armour to improve the protection of officers deployed on operational duties.
“We are also procuring additional body armor to provide additional protection for officers who go on operational duties,” he said.
President Mahama made the announcement in Accra while commissioning a new 85-bed ward at the Police Hospital, named after the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
He recalled that the government handed over 50 armoured vehicles to the Police Service in December last year to support its operations and enhance the safety of officers.
Beyond the provision of vehicles and protective equipment, the President said he had asked the Finance Minister to make GH¢300 million available in the 2027 Budget for the construction of 250 new apartments for police personnel.
The housing project, he said, was intended to ease congestion in some police barracks and improve accommodation for officers.
President Mahama said the measures, alongside the expansion of the Police Hospital, formed part of the government’s broader efforts to equip the Service to maintain national security while reducing the risks officers face in the line of duty.
The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said the President’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and the welfare of security personnel continued to make a lasting impact on the country.
He described the newly commissioned facility as a visible reflection of that commitment and President Mahama’s determination to build a stronger and more inclusive Ghana.
The IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, expressed appreciation to the President for his continued support for the Police Service and attention to the welfare of its personnel.
He assured that the Police Administration would continue to pursue initiatives aimed at improving the health, welfare and operational effectiveness of officers.
