The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged the Governing Council of the National Defence University of Ghana to make merit, fairness and academic excellence the foundation of the institution’s administration and operations.

He said decisions on admissions, student registration, graduation and staff appointments must be guided by merit and the highest professional standards, with equal opportunities for all, regardless of race, ethnicity, political opinion, colour, gender, occupation, religion or disability.

Minister Iddrisu made the call at the official inauguration of the University’s Governing Council, yesterday in Accra, stressing that the institution must build a strong culture of professionalism, discipline and integrity while contributing to Ghana’s defence and security needs.

He said the University has an important role in strengthening the country’s capacity to respond to evolving security threats by providing quality education and training for military personnel and other security professionals.

According to the Minister, the institution is expected to develop into a centre of excellence in strategic studies, operational readiness, defence research and security policy development.

He expressed the expectation that the University would equip its graduates with the knowledge, skills and professional competence needed to address emerging national, regional and global security challenges.

Mr Iddrisu urged the Council to provide effective leadership and ensure that the University upholds high academic and professional standards as it establishes its place in Ghana’s education and security landscape.
