Aspiring Greater Accra Regional Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nii Tetteh Laryea Cyril, popularly known as TLC, has challenged the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Second Vice Chairman, Henry Nana Boakye, over his appeal for Ghanaians to give Dr Mahamudu Bawumia another chance in the 2028 general elections.
Nana B, in recent comments, urged voters to support the former Vice President and NPP flagbearer, arguing that he had good plans for the country.
However, in a counterstatement titled “NANA B, GHANAIANS HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN!”, Cyril TLC said the electorate should not be expected to overlook the economic difficulties and other concerns associated with the Akufo-Addo administration, in which Dr Bawumia served as Vice President.
He argued that before seeking another mandate, the NPP must address questions about its previous record in government and demonstrate how it intends to avoid repeating past mistakes.
Cyril TLC cited the depreciation of the cedi, the rising cost of living, economic hardship and concerns about public safety as issues that remain fresh in the minds of many Ghanaians.
He also pointed to the destruction of water bodies through illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, arguing that the damage to the country's natural resources remained an important issue requiring accountability.
The NDC communicator recalled that Dr Bawumia had built much of his political appeal around his economic credentials, including his use of the trotro mate analogy to persuade Ghanaians to entrust him with the country's leadership.
He said the NPP was subsequently judged by voters based on their experiences under its administration, insisting that the party could not rely on promises alone to regain public confidence.
“Today, Nana B is asking Ghanaians to give Dr. Bawumia another opportunity because he has good plans for the country. But plans alone are not enough,” TLC argued in his statement.
According to him, voters deserve explanations about decisions taken under the previous government and a clear account of what would be done differently if the NPP returned to power.
He stressed that political parties seeking renewed public support must demonstrate humility, acknowledge legitimate concerns and accept responsibility where necessary.
Cyril TLC also said the NDC had a responsibility, as the governing party, to communicate its policies effectively, provide evidence of its achievements and keep the public informed about efforts to rebuild the economy.
He maintained that the government's Resetting Agenda was focused on improving livelihoods, strengthening public safety and restoring confidence in governance, adding that these objectives needed to be communicated clearly to the public.
On illegal mining, he called for continued public scrutiny and accountability from officials responsible for protecting Ghana's natural resources, warning against allowing the damage caused by galamsey to fade from public attention.
Addressing Nana B directly, he said: “Do not approach Ghanaians as though they have forgotten. The people remember the promises, the economic hardships, and the expectations that were not met.”
He insisted that the NPP needed to respond to the concerns raised about its previous administration rather than simply asking voters to give Dr Bawumia another opportunity.
Cyril TLC said the NDC's Resetting Agenda remained centred on economic recovery, improved livelihoods, renewed public confidence and the creation of better opportunities for Ghanaians.
He added that the party must remain committed to delivering measurable results that ordinary citizens could assess against its promises.
The aspiring regional communications officer also raised concerns about former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, calling on the NPP to cooperate with relevant authorities to facilitate his return to Ghana to address outstanding legal questions.
He concluded that Ghana needed leadership that listens to citizens, accepts responsibility and delivers on its commitments, arguing that accountability for past decisions must remain central to the country's democracy.
