Teacher Pressure vs Political Power: Time for a New Bargain

The recent teachers’ strike in Ghana has reignited an important national debate: Does political power respond more readily to pressure than persuasion? The government’s commitment to begin paying verified promotion arrears by October 16 underscores the influence of collective action.

Yet, the bigger question remains: Must teachers repeatedly withdraw their services before their legitimate concerns receive the attention they deserve?

It is time for Ghanaian teacher unions to move beyond fighting for arrears and pursue a sustained campaign for improved welfare, better working conditions and remuneration that reflects teachers’ contribution to national development.

Teachers constitute a formidable professional group with nationwide influence and considerable numerical strength. Through unity, strategic leadership and effective collective bargaining, this strength can become a powerful instrument for lasting change.

While the Legislature, the Executive, the Judiciary and teachers have different responsibilities, Ghana needs an honest conversation about public-sector remuneration, benefits and the value placed on those who serve the nation.

Teachers educate the people who eventually become political leaders, judges, professionals and national decision-makers. They nurture the ambitions of our children, often working under difficult conditions. Their welfare should therefore not be treated as an afterthought.

The objective is not to undermine other professions, but to secure fair and sustainable conditions of service that recognise teachers’ sacrifices and indispensable role in nation-building.

If education is the foundation of national development, those who build that foundation deserve dignity, fair treatment and conditions of service that reflect their vital contribution.

It is time to turn teacher pressure into lasting gains and secure a better deal for Ghanaian teachers.
