Social activist and lead convener of the Democracy Hub pressure group, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has predicted a significant reduction in the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary majority in the 2028 general elections.
He said the party’s current two-thirds majority has been underwhelming and has failed to produce the level of reforms and parliamentary oversight he expected.
Barker-Vormawor argued that unless the NDC quickly begins to make effective use of its majority, the party could pay a heavy political price at the next elections.
“I predict that 2028 will decimate the NDC majority in Parliament considerably, if we don’t see that majority come into its own very quickly,” he said in a social media post on Thursday, October 8.
He said the NDC’s large majority had not resulted in major programme-based reforms that had moved governance in a strategic direction.
He also criticised Parliament for failing to use its oversight powers more effectively to address social challenges facing Ghanaians.
“We haven’t seen parliamentary oversight over the executive change in any dramatic fashion and we haven’t seen the power of parliament utilised to address social issues facing the Ghanaian,” he said.
Mr Barker-Vormawor’s comments followed a poll by Executive Director of the Global InfoAnalytics Mussa Dankwah, which showed that nearly 60% of NDC delegates rated the party’s Madina Member of Parliament Francis Xavier Sosu between average and very poor.
He, however, said his assessment was not directed at the Madina MP personally but at the NDC’s performance as a whole.
The NDC entered the Ninth Parliament after winning a commanding majority in the December 2024 parliamentary elections.
They currently hold 185 seats, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) secured 87 seats, and four independent MPs, all of whom, caucus with the NDC.
