Majority Chief Whip and President of the Ghana Law Society (GLS), Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has dismissed suggestions that the Society secured accreditation because the National Democratic Congress (NDC) returned to power after the 2024 general elections.
The Ghana Law Society was incorporated in 2022 and obtained accreditation in January 2025, shortly after the NDC won the elections.
But Mr Dafeamekpor insists the timing was coincidental, arguing that the accreditation was the result of a process the Society had been pursuing for some time.
Speaking to Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, October 7, he said the Society had consistently pursued accreditation and had to wait through the required procedures before receiving approval.
“We were accredited in 2025. We have always applied for accreditation. You know accreditation, it goes through a process. No, it’s not a coincidence. There’s no coincidence. We have been working. You can check our history,” he added.
Mr Dafeamekpor said the Society’s activities predated its accreditation, particularly in supporting law students and advocating changes in legal education.
He explained that the organisation had intervened in matters affecting students, including difficulties surrounding examinations, long before it received official accreditation.
“We’ve been supporting students. We’ve been registering students. You know, when students had issues with their exams and all that, the faculty, it was the Law Society of Ghana that had been fighting for their interests,” he said.
He also pointed to his work with Madina Member of Parliament, Francis-Xavier Sosu, on a private member’s bill aimed at reforming legal education as part of the Society’s advocacy efforts.
“If you recall, Francis Sosu and I filed a private member’s bill to bring reform to legal education because of the problems of entrance exams and all that. We did so as members of the Law Society of Ghana,” he said.
According to the GLS President, the Society did not abandon its application when the accreditation process took longer than expected, but instead remained patient until the necessary procedures were completed.
“If you apply for accreditation and they say you should wait, you don’t take it casually. You wait. You have to be patient,” he said.
Mr Dafeamekpor disclosed that the Ghana Law Society has grown to more than 1,500 professional members, alongside a student membership exceeding 15,000.
