Ve Golokuati, the capital of the Afadzato South District, is recording high cases of typhoid fever, which local authorities have attributed to the lack of potable water in the community.
Health officials at the Ve Golokuati Health Centre told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the facility continued to record a high number of typhoid-related cases.
Mr Manfred Tawiah, District Chief Executive (DCE) of Afadzato South, who confirmed the situation to the GNA, said the water crisis in the town had contributed significantly to the reported typhoid cases.
He said residents had, for years, depended on unsafe water sources, including streams and untreated wells, which remained a major public health concern.
Mr Tawiah said the Assembly was collaborating with the Ghana Water Company Limited and other stakeholders to provide a sustainable water supply for the town.
In the meantime, plans were underway to provide mechanised boreholes as an interim measure to improve access to potable water.
Some residents told the GNA that the situation worsened during the dry season when many of their water sources dried up.
Health officials, therefore, advised residents to treat water before drinking and observe good hygiene practices to reduce the risk of infection.
