NPP’s 2028 Gamble: Backdoor Selection or Strategic Salvation?

NPP’s 2028 Gamble: Backdoor Selection or Strategic Salvation?

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is staring down a brewing internal crisis as the 2028 flagbearer of the party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, backed by the newly elected National Executive Committee (NEC), prepares to implement a controversial "candidate-scouting" strategy ahead of the 2028 general elections.

While leadership defends the move as a scientific method to curb the destructive influence of money in internal politics, grassroots members and political analysts fear the strategy is a backdoor maneuver to handpick favoured contenders, threatening to completely subvert the party's democratic tradition.

A Departure from Democratic Norms

For decades, the NPP has prided itself on its bottom-up democratic structures, where local delegates hold the ultimate power to choose who represents them on the ballot. However, the newly announced nationwide candidate search across all constituencies represents a major departure from this established rulebook.

The strategy tasks an independent team with identifying popular community leaders, regardless of whether they are active party members or financially capable of running a traditional campaign.

Critics argue that by inserting centrally vetted names into local races, the national leadership is actively diluting the power of local delegates and dampening the party’s constitutionally mandated primary processes.

The Justification: The Curse of Monetisation

The push for centralized scouting follows the party’s evaluation of severe electoral setbacks, which saw its parliamentary strength plummet from 137 seats down to 88 seats.

Defending the new approach during an address in Kumasi, Dr. Bawumia directly blamed the commercialization of internal primaries for the party's current minority status in parliament.

"We are going to do a candidate search across all the constituencies, because some people can win parliamentary primaries because they have money, but they can't win the general elections," Dr. Bawumia stated. "If you leave it to them, they will win the primary, but you've lost the seat."

The leadership maintains that the search will run alongside early primaries, acting as a screening mechanism to inject highly viable, credible candidates into constituencies where local dynamics have stalled.

Backdoor Selection or Strategic Salvation?

Despite assurances that this framework will merely complement rather than replace traditional internal primaries, suspicion remains high at the grassroots level.

Skeptics are warning that defining a candidate's "viability" through top-down empirical research rather than local ballot boxes opens the door to nepotism and favouritism. If the national executive body uses its weight to promote "scouted" favourites, it could alienate dedicated local aspirants who have spent years building capital within their communities.

The tension highlights a structural dilemma: can a mass political party effectively cure the disease of political monetization by reducing the democratic authority of its own delegates?

A Risky Gamble for 2028

As the NPP prepares for the high-stakes 2028 cycle, the NEC's new strategy remains a highly volatile gamble.

If handled transparently, it could help the party field popular, uncorrupted community leaders capable of reclaiming lost parliamentary territory. However, if the grassroots perceive this scouting system as an elite, backdoor selection process designed to bypass the party's established rules, the NPP risks fracturing its own base long before the first national ballot is cast.
