Sekyedumase is set for a major educational transformation following a bold initiative by the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church to establish a College of Education in the community.
The announcement was made during the 100th Anniversary celebration of the SDA Church at Sekyedumase, an event that brought together religious leaders, traditional authorities, political actors, community stakeholders and residents to commemorate a century of faith, service and institutional growth.
The occasion was graced by several distinguished personalities, including the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Nana Kwasi, the Member of Parliament for Ejura-Sekyedumase, Hon. Dr. Alhaji Muhammad Bawah Braimah, and the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Rafiu Adam Seidu.
The proposed College of Education is being viewed as a strategic intervention that will expand access to tertiary education, strengthen teacher development and create new opportunities for the youth of Sekyedumase and neighbouring communities.
Demonstrating support for the initiative, the MP and the MCE pledged GH¢20,000 and 200 bags of cement toward the realisation of the project. Their contributions reflect a shared commitment to community-led development efforts capable of generating sustainable educational and socio-economic benefits for the constituency.
The proposed institution aligns with the SDA Church’s longstanding contribution to education in Ghana. The Church has historically established and supported schools and Colleges of Education across the country, significantly shaping teacher preparation and national development.
Addressing the gathering, stakeholders emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in transforming the vision into a functioning educational institution. Support from political leadership, combined with the initiative of the SDA Church and the commitment of the community, is expected to provide a strong foundation for the project.
For Sekyedumase, the proposed College of Education represents more than an academic facility. It carries the potential to become a centre for teacher development, intellectual advancement, employment creation and local economic activity.
The development also highlights how religious institutions, political leadership and local communities can unite around a shared development objective without compromising their respective roles.
As the SDA Church celebrates a century of service, the proposed College of Education marks a forward-looking chapter in its legacy—building institutions today that will shape the human capital of tomorrow.
The people of Sekyedumase now look forward to the next phase of the process as stakeholders work collectively to translate the vision into a lasting educational landmark for the municipality and the wider Ashanti Region.
