The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is setting its sights on returning to power in 2028, Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin has said.
He said the party's priority after its National Delegates Conference in Kumasi would be to unite its structures, rebuild trust with voters and prepare for the next general election.
Speaking at the conference on Saturday, October 3, 2026, the Effutu MP said the NPP had completed its constitutional amendments and was finalising its reorganisation ahead of the 2028 elections.
He said the party must now focus on supporting its presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and securing parliamentary seats across all 276 constituencies.
“There are bound to be winners and losers among those who have shown courage and commitment by putting their name forward for today's contest,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said.
“But when the ballots are counted, and applause fades, nobody must leave this venue believing that personal defeat today is a defeat for either themselves or the NPP.”
Mr Afenyo-Markin said the party's presidential candidate for the 2028 election had already been selected, and urged members to leave the conference united behind him.
He said the NPP must use its time in opposition to rebuild trust with voters, strengthen its structures and develop policies capable of addressing the concerns of Ghanaians.
“We shall live as one. We must live with one purpose to win back the trust of the people, defend our democracy with all the vigour, hold the government accountable and push it without fear of arrest or intimidation to deliver on the promises it made to the Ghanaian people,” he said.
The Minority Leader said the NPP had reflected on its defeat in the 2024 elections and identified areas requiring improvement.
He said the party would present a “more credible and impactful vision and programmes” to voters as it seeks to regain power in 2028.
