Delegates of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have approved an amendment to the party's constitution to make an elected presidential candidate the leader of the party.
The amendment was approved through an oral vote at the party's National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
The motion, identified as Motion Number 10, seeks to amend Articles 10, 4, 1 and 13 of the party's constitution to provide for the elected presidential candidate to assume leadership of the party.
The amendment states that when the party has an elected presidential candidate, the presidential candidate shall be the leader of the party.
The delegates also approved a related amendment clarifying the leadership of the party while it is in government.
Under the approved provision, the President shall be the leader of the party when the NPP is in government, until a new presidential candidate is elected.
The amendment is intended to define the leadership structure of the party based on whether it is in government or has an elected presidential candidate.
